3 Signs Your Car Needs A Wheel Alignment

O’Neills Tyres • February 24, 2025

A smooth and controlled drive depends on many factors, one of the most important being proper wheel alignment. But what is wheel alignment exactly? It refers to adjusting the angles of your car’s wheels to match the manufacturer’s specifications. When your wheels are correctly aligned, your vehicle handles better, tyres wear evenly, and fuel efficiency is optimised. However, misaligned wheels can cause uneven tyre wear, poor handling, and even adversely affect fuel economy. Here are some key signs that indicate your car might need a wheel alignment.

1. Uneven or Rapid Tyre Wear

One of the most common signs of misalignment is uneven tyre wear. Ideally, all four tyres should wear down evenly over time. If you notice excessive wear on the inner or outer edges, it’s a strong indication that your wheels are not aligned properly.

  • Inspect your tyres regularly for irregular wear patterns.
  • Run your hand along the tyre surface to feel for rough or uneven areas.
  • Uneven wear can shorten tyre lifespan and increase the risk of a blowout.

Routine wheel alignments help distribute weight evenly across all tyres, ensuring better traction and longevity.

2. Vehicle Pulling to One Side

Does your car drift to the left or right when you’re driving straight? If you constantly adjust your steering to keep the vehicle centred, your wheel alignment could be off.

  • Try driving on a straight, level road and briefly loosen your grip on the steering wheel.
  • If the car pulls to one side without any steering input, it’s time for an alignment check.
  • Misaligned wheels force your tyres to work harder, increasing rolling resistance and reducing fuel efficiency.

Ignoring this issue can strain your suspension system, leading to further mechanical damage over time.

3. Steering Wheel Vibrations or Off-Centre Position

Another common symptom of misalignment is a vibrating steering wheel. This happens when the tyres do not make even contact with the road surface, causing instability.

  • If your steering wheel shakes at higher speeds, misalignment or unbalanced tyres may be the culprit.
  • Your steering wheel should naturally return to the centre position after a turn. If it remains slightly off, it’s a sign of wheel misalignment.
  • Resistance when turning can indicate excessive friction between misaligned wheels and the road.

Proper alignment ensures your steering remains responsive, making your driving experience safer and more comfortable.
